About

Francesco Zangari

Hi everyone, I’m Francesco and I am currently a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Toronto within the Lunenfeld Tanenbaum Research Institute. I study the intersection between RNA/Protein biology by building new tools to survey their interactions. These mapping efforts will serve as an atlas that can be referred to in diseased states when often these interactions are altered.

When I’m not doing experiments, I’ve spent my time making science accessible through my writing. I am driven to captivate readers with in-depth stories about the people involved in science/new scientific discoveries and am truly rewarded by the interactions I get from readers after they read my pieces. Covering an array of topics like the microbiome, COVID-19 and Canada’s biotechnology sector is important to me as well as I get to explore the expansive research being done across disciplines.

Through my writing, I have become involved with science outreach groups and I currently work with both Scihigh and ComSciConCAN. In a broad sense, both groups focused on fostering scientific literacy throughout the education system, with Scihigh focused on K-12 students and ComSciConCAN on undergraduate/graduate students. While we know science can sometimes be pedantic and closed off, working with these groups, I’ve been able to directly impact students and guide them to becoming scientific leaders throughout their education and future careers.

While I spend a lot of time in the scientific realm, I do get away from it occasionally. I like to spend time watching sporting events, digesting the latest NPR podcast or watching investigative documentaries.
